Intense flames and thick smoke held firefighters at bay and led to a Pearl River man's death in a house fire Monday.
Officials say a passing motorist spotted the raging fire at 86 Lois Dr. and called 911. Firefighters say smoke and low visibility drove them out of the house. They also cite problems with the water supply needed to fight the fire. It took firefighters an hour to get the flames under control.
Authorities say they tried their best to save the 64-year-old resident. The cause of the fire, which burned through the home's siding and roof, is under investigation.
