A local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is fighting food insecurity in Mount Vernon by putting together 400 "grow bags" that will be donated to residents for free.
A weekend event was organized by the Zeta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and included a variety of activities including composting and live-cooking demonstrations.
The "grow bags" that people helped put together will be given out for free to those who sign up for a spot at this link.
The bags contain seeds for kale, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, basil and other plants.
Each bag is estimated to produce 15 to 30 pounds of food over the growing season.
They will be given away for free next week on Tuesday, May 30, and Saturday, June 3.
