A fast-moving fire destroyed several apartments in a Spring Valley building Wednesday, leaving almost 20 people homeless for Thanksgiving.
Firefighters rescued six people from the windows and the deck on the second floor of the three-story building on Seabring Avenue. But upon entry to the building, three firefighters were injured by what is known as a flashover, which is caused by intense heat. It took several fire departments to get the blaze under control. A firewall kept it from spreading to attached building next door.
No one was seriously injured and neighbors say they will be there to help those displaced by the fire just before Thanksgiving. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
