A blaze at an apartment complex forced 11 families to flee the burning building Thursday.
The fire began at the 27 Benson Street apartment complex before it jumped to a neighboring garage. Volunteer firefighter Joe Cannavaro heard about the blaze on his scanner before realizing that it was his garage that was on fire. He held the fire at bay by dousing the flames with a garden hose.
Fire officials say some firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion and that one was taken to Nyack Hospital with a head injury. All of the building?s tenants escaped and none were injured in the blaze.
The families have not yet been allowed back into their homes because the building was seriously damaged.
