Fire at closed NYC shelter for unhoused in Orange County deemed suspicious

The former New York City shelter for the unhoused has been closed since 2008.

Officials now say a two-alarm fire Wednesday at the former site of a New York City-run shelter in Orange County is being investigated as suspicious. 

The Chester Fire Department tells News 12 that an old barn filled with mattresses and a nearby storage shed were fully engulfed in flames when they got to the now-closed Camp LaGuardia grounds around 9 p.m.

The old city shelter for the unhoused has been closed since 2008. 

Fire officials say an excavator had to be brought in to remove the old mattresses from the barn before the fire could be extinguished

Orange County owns the property. News 12 has a call out to the county for more information.
