The floodwaters have finally receded enough to allow residents in some parts of Yonkers to clean up. But mud is still everywhere, and many driveways are full of things headed for the landfill.
It is only from the air that one can see the totality of the destruction Ida inflicted on the Hudson Valley. Flooding from the storm took out a parking lot on Warburton Avenue, bringing two cars with it and dropping the muddy remains onto the train tracks below.
Not too far from there, on Nepperhan Avenue, families are just now starting the process of cleaning up after the Saw Mill River flooded their entire neighborhood with about 5 feet of water.
"Trapped… we were trapped. It was a one-in-a-lifetime experience. Hopefully, we don't have to go through it again. Everything damaged, car, who knows, a matter of minutes," said resident Christina Tawfik.
The Saw Mill River Parkway finally opened up about 4:30 p.m. Friday, more than 48 hours after the first raindrops from Ida started falling.
