A well-known former teacher in Rockland County, who was left quadriplegic in a surfing accident, has now been ordered to pay thousands in legal fees or sell his home.
Former North Rockland High School teacher and Army veteran Billy Keenan was ordered by Rockland County Supreme Court Judge Paul Marx to pay his ex-wife $62,000 in legal fees or sell his home.
Keenan, from New City, was paralyzed from the neck down in 2013 and lives on a fixed income. He says he has no means of paying the money by the deadline next month.
"To me, it's just the ultimate travesty of justice and utterly shocking," he says.
Keenan donates his time as a motivational speaker for students and is currently writing a book about his personal struggles.
A GoFundMe for the former teacher hopes to help him save his home.
