In the wake of two recent garage collapses, one Rockland lawmaker wants garage owners to take an active role in keeping residents safe.
Snow build-up on the upper level of the Poughkeepsie Galleria mall parking garage forced part of the ceiling to collapse. The same type of incident occurred a day later in the parking garage at the Sloatsburg rest stop. No one was injured in either collapse. Legislator Ed Day (R-New City) is calling on the owners of parking garages to ensure tragedy doesn't strike. Day says owners of public garages should take proactive steps to keep citizens safe.
Day says the Legislature shouldn?t have to get involved. He says hopefully individuals running the garages will have their engineering departments speak to maintenance to make sure there isn?t a situation that can result in tragedy.
