Whether you decorate with them or want to collect them all, nothing quite makes a house a home like a plant! There are classic houseplants like snake plants, pothos, orchids, and African violets, but you may have noticed people's palettes changing toward the bold and beautiful. You can't go wrong with giant monster leaves, tidy pilea, and heart shaped syngonium. But what's trendy this year? We spoke with Hicks Nurseries in Westbury to share a few plants that are gaining a lot of interest.

Citrus

These subtropical fruit trees are flying off the shelves and Hicks Nurseries has been keeping them in stock throughout the year because of their surging popularity. Citrus is easiest to care for if you bring them outside during the spring, whenever nighttime temperatures are above the upper 30s and daytime temperatures are at least in the mid-50s. As far as fruit trees go, they're one of the easiest to keep inside the house and will start fruiting from as small as a foot or 2 feet tall! That's because the trees you see at local nurseries are grafted with adult branches.
How to care for citrus:
Citrus bloom heavily in the spring, or when they think it's spring. It's best to keep these plants in sync with our seasons. Give citrus a spot near a bright window far away from heaters. Our houses are hotter and drier during the winter months. If they're near a heater, they will bloom too early. The days aren't long enough for the fruit to properly develop.
Citrus need fast-draining soil and shouldn't be allowed to dry out too much.

Cactus

Cactus is an easy plant to grow; its sharp spines and interesting shapes are a perfect piece of décor for a modern or traditional design! Many types of plants fall into the Cacti & Succulent category. Euphorbias are among the easiest because they are forgiving if you over or underwater them. They're also faster growing than true cacti, so you'll get that desert look for less money!
The most common mistake with cacti is overwatering. Make sure you have your cacti in containers with holes in the bottom. You can keep them in their plastic containers and drop them into decorative ones if you can't find a container with holes in the bottom that fits the look of your house.

Rare and unusual plants

Houseplant lovers are always looking for unusual plants and nothing quite says that like a Black Bat Flower. The plant itself looks like a peace lily - until it blooms. The flowers open up with filaments that look like whiskers. There is nothing quite like this plant when it's in bloom. The care is similar to orchids. It needs fast-draining soil and plenty of humidity. Don't let this plant dry out and keep it away from heaters.
