Gas prices throw a wrench in Labor Day travel plans

According to AAA, the national average for gas is $3.82, but at the rest stop in Ardsley along I-87, was almost 20 cents higher. Just down the street from there, News 12 found gas for $4.19.

Labor Day Weekend is here! After a massive summer of traveling for Americans, many are planning one final getaway for the last long weekend of the season.

"The overwhelming majority of people who travel for a holiday, drive to their destinations,” said Robert Sinclair, a spokesman for AAA.  “We did local surveys of AAA Northeast members in the five states we cover and 85% said they were going to drive."

But some families in the Hudson Valley tell News12 they aren’t traveling very far, and that’s all because of the price of gas.

According to AAA, the national average for gas is $3.82, but at the rest stop in Ardsley along I-87, was almost 20 cents higher. Just down the street from there, News 12 found gas for $4.19.

The Parbat family is headed to Warwick for the weekend.

"We actually just saw the gas price and decided not to fill up, we're going to see if it's cheaper out there,” said Leah Parbat.

“We're hoping further down it'll be a little cheaper it's really crazy," added her husband, Victor.

The Turan family, who hail from Long Island, are headed to the Catskillls for the weekend.
But they filled up before they left, and it’s a good thing they did.

“We got it for $3.59 in Long Island,” Esra Seckin-Turan explained, “We probably saved a lot!”

But even with getting a break on their gas, and only traveling a relatively short distance, they say this trip will still be expensive, but worth it.

"School opens on Tuesday so we just wanted to do a quick trip before. The gas prices were definitely a main factor, but you know we just wanted to do it," she said.
