Good Cause Eviction Bill left out of NY budget

Immigrant rights advocates say the measure would have greatly helped the undocumented community.

When New York's $220 billion budget passed two days ago, it left out legislation related to housing.

Advocates say they are disappointed that the Good Cause Eviction Bill didn't make it in.

It would have prevented landlords from evicting tenants without a good reason or from being displaced due to rent hikes. It also would have capped rent hikes to 3%.

Immigrant rights advocates say the measure would have greatly helped the undocumented community.

News 12 spoke with someone from the Builders Institute of Westchester and the Mid-Hudson Region who says what is really needed here is an answer to the affordable housing crisis.

"Ultimately, what we need, according to Westchester County's assessment, is something like 12,000 more units in Westchester County," says Tim Foley, of the Builders Institute of Westchester and the Mid-Hudson Region.

It is unlikely that the Good Cause Eviction Bill will pass before the Legislature convenes in June.
