In response to a rising number of incidents involving commercial, rental, and moving trucks colliding with bridges and overpasses in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced a Bridge Hit Enforcement Campaign. This statewide initiative, conducted by state police, will run until Saturday.
According to the governor's office, there were a total of 808 reported bridge strikes from 2021 to last year. To address this issue, officials will intensify patrols on parkways and areas with a history of bridge hits. They will also collaborate with local law enforcement and commercial vehicle inspectors to develop prevention strategies.
In addition to this effort, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Thruway Authority, and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee have been using social media platforms throughout the week to remind drivers to verify their truck's height before embarking on their journeys.
