Gov. Kathy Hochul insists she is standing by her chief judge pick as criticism over his background continues to flare up.
Hector LaSalle would be the first Latino to lead New York's highest court, but he is facing opposition from many progressive-leaning lawmakers who feel his record is far too moderate.
Ahead of next week's hearing, News 12’s Tara Rosenblum caught up with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the state Capitol, along with former Gov. David Paterson, who defended LaSalle's record.
LaSalle currently presides over the appellate division of the New York state Supreme Court, handling cases from Westchester, Brooklyn and several other downstate counties.
He is seeking to replace Janet DiFiore, a former Westchester County district attorney.
