Bronx day care providers are calling on the state Senate for help after Governor George Pataki (R-NY) vetoed legislation that would have allowed them to unionize. The workers need the Senate?s help to override the veto. Bronx home day care workers say they follow city and state regulations. But without a union, many say they have no way to voice their concerns. Several say they work long hours and have no pension, vacation or sick time. The United Federation of Teachers is also joining in the effort. Governor Pataki?s office says he vetoed the legislation because, ?it is flawed and would endanger the state?s access to more than $300 million in federal child care funds.?
