In honor of March being Red Cross Month, a flag raising was held at Greenwich Town Hall Friday.

First Selectman Fred Camillo delivered a proclamation.

Stephanie Dunn Ashley, the CEO of the American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter, says the event provides awareness of the work the chapter does throughout the year.

"We're particularly proud of our chapter here and our volunteers in Greenwich do a wonderful job. They educate. They collect blood. They just they have constant programs there. They're a constant presence in the community. And when there's something that goes wrong, even here, they're the first boots on the ground," she said.

Camillo says the Red Cross truly cares for the town.

"Our volunteerism, our civic pride here is second to none. But certainly, the Red Cross is one of our more important. But they're all important. But the Red Cross really because of what they do, it's usually in a time of need that they step up. So, we're grateful for them," he said.

The Red Cross has installed almost 700 free smoke alarms and educated more than 8,000 residents in first aid and CPR.
