A rally was held Thursday in front of the Yonkers Social Security office, protesting the planned closures of the White Plains and Poughkeepsie In-Person Social Security Hearing offices. According to the Associated Press, the White Plains Social Security office, located at 75 South Broadway, is slated to close May 31, and the Poughkeepsie office, located at 332 Main St., is slated to close July 31. The significance of both offices is that, with the exception of New York City, they are the only two Social Security offices in the lower Hudson Valley that allow for in person hearings. The next closest, once they shutter, will be in New York City, Albany and New Haven, Connecticut. According to the Associated Press, both offices are just two of the at least 47 that could close under a plan by the Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE. "Social Security has been here for 90 years and it's a lifeline for people. Closing the White Plains office, taking the phones out of the Bronx office...all of these things are designed to get people to give up and not just on social security. On veteran benefits, things that benefit our public-school systems through the Department of Education, public health issues, and laying off people left and right. This is an attempt to remake America," said Rep. George Latimer. In a March 27 statement, the Social Security Administration refuted claims of any offices permanently closing, with the exception of the White Plains office. The administration was contacted for a comment but have not responded.
