A man is in custody in Haverstraw after allegedly setting a fire and trying to kill someone.

Police say they arrested 72-year-old German Santiago on Friday after finding a mattress on fire near the front door of a house.

Witnesses told officers the fire was set intentionally and that the suspect ran off with a large machete.

Santiago was found and arrested shortly after.

He is facing multiple charges including arson and attempted murder, according to Haverstraw police.
