The Haverstraw Highway Department will soon be using a salt mixture to better tackle snow and ice conditions on its roads.
The reason behind the change to salt brine is twofold. The town will save money since the mixture of storm water and salt will not spill out of their trucks when they transfer it from their salt dome to smaller trucks. In addition, it will lead to much easier clean up efforts because it melts snow faster.
"What it will do is keep it from bonding to the road and hopefully we'll be using less salt by using the salt brine and it should cut down on costs for the town,? said Frank Brooks, the Haverstraw Highway Department superintendent.
The town of Haverstraw recently spent a little over $15,000 on new truck equipment to use with the salt brine.
The Haverstraw Highway Department will be getting the salt brine from the Clarkstown Highway Department free of charge.
