The Haverstraw Town Police Department has a lot more ground to cover since it took over for the now dissolved village police department.
On January 1, the town also took over the village police cars. However, those cruisers were not equipped with computers like the town?s cars were. The computers can give the officer information from the DMV, jail databases and criminal records. Plus, they ensure instant communication with the entire police force and central command. Now the town will receive $40,000 in federal money to help update the cruisers.
Along with the grant for Haverstraw, Rockland County recently received a $250,000 federal grant to improve emergency communications.
