Headlines: Cold case murder, correctional facility to close
Here are some stories making headlines across the Hudson Valley.
A Bronx woman and her accomplice are facing felony charges in a 2012 cold case murder. Wanda Veguilla, 41, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her girlfriend Pamela Graddick. Her accomplice, John Torres, 30, of Yonkers is charged with criminal facilitation, hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence.  They're accused of shooting Graddick and leaving her body in a wooded area in Yonkers back in 2012.
The Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill will close on Thursday after nearly 50 years in operation. The state announced last November that Downstate, a maximum-security facility, was among six prisons statewide set to close. More than 1,500 people worked at the facility, but the state had said there would not be any layoffs. The facility’s 690 prisoners will be moved to other facilities that have vacant cells. The state said the prisons are being closed because of a drop in the prison population.
