Headlines: Garbage pickup back, Greenburgh woman who feared missing wedding now overseas, rise in positive COVID cases linked to Olympics

Headlines: Garbage pickup back, Greenburgh woman who feared missing wedding now overseas, rise in positive COVID cases linked to Olympics Here are some local stories making headlines this Monday. After trash troubles in Mount Vernon last week, garbage pickup is back on a regular schedule. Service was halted Thursday after Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard declared a state of emergency. The issue happened to be with the garbage trucks. The mayor says many of the trucks are 25 years old, leak oil, have bald tires, and are not safe enough to be on the road. She says garbage was picked up on the south and north side this weekend, with the help of trucks from Yonkers and the state of New York. Trucks from New York City are coming to the area to help pick up garbage on Tuesday. Schedules are back to normal, and residents should continue to follow their regular trash pickup schedule. A Greenburgh woman who feared she would miss her brother's wedding in Bulgaria due to passport problems is now overseas. Claudine Howson dealt with delays and had trouble getting a passport for the trip , even though she applied for expedited service for it back in May. Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner got in touch with Sen. Chuck Schumer's office, who reached back with the good news that Howson's passport had been approved. Schumer is now pushing the State Department to get tens of thousands of New Yorkers out of what he calls "passport purgatory." There are new concerns surrounding the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, after the number of COVID cases linked to the event has risen to 28, with days to go until the opening ceremonies. Team USA's 17-year-old tennis rising star Coco Guaff will miss the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID. Also, an American alternate on the women's gymnastics team has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been put in isolation. The games are scheduled to begin Friday.
