Here are some stories making headlines across the Hudson Valley.
Officials say an officer at Green Haven Correctional Facility was struck and injured by a 25-pound dumbbell thrown by an inmate. They say the inmate was carrying the dumbbell from a yard when he threw it at the officer as he was entering a housing unit at the maximum-security correctional facility on the morning of April 8. Authorities say that the officer blocked the dumbbell, a response unit was called, and the inmate was handcuffed and taken to a facility medical clinic for evaluation. Authorities say upon entering the unit, the inmate continued to be combative, kicking the escort officers. The officer who was injured by the dumbbell was treated by medical staff at the facility and transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center for pain, swelling and discomfort to his left hand and finger. He did not return to duty. The 31-year-old inmate is serving his second stint in prison for weapons possession.
Two truck drivers involved in a crash in Sullivan County are expected to be OK after authorities say one driver was pinned inside their vehicle for three hours. State police say a loaded dump truck and an 18-wheeler collided at the intersection of Wurtsboro Mountain Road and Route 209 on Tuesday. Authorities say the driver who was trapped was taken by helicopter to a trauma center with injuries that are not life-threatening. The cause is under investigation. It's the second crash at the intersection involving commercial vehicles within weeks.
A fire heavily damaged a house in New Hampton Wednesday. Fire officials say the flames broke out around 5:30 a.m. on Onion Avenue. No people were injured, but the pets inside the home were killed. The Red Cross is now assisting the homeowner, who was not home at the time. The cause of the fire has not been released.
