High-ranking Mount Vernon police official, son charged in connection with Bronx shooting

A high-ranking Mount Vernon police official and her son are facing multiple felony charges in connection with a June shooting in the Bronx.
Police say 49-year-old Jennifer Lackard and her 20-year-old son, Chase Lackard, were arrested Tuesday at their home in Soundview. They are charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, criminal possession of a firearm, conspiracy and reckless endangerment.
Investigators say the charges stem from a shooting on East 162nd Street and Grand Avenue in June. According to police sources, Chase Lackard allegedly fired shots at a group of people before getting into a getaway vehicle. Sources say Jennifer Lackard was driving the car.
Court records show Jennifer Lackard was arraigned Tuesday. Bail was set at $75,000. She is due back in court Sept. 25.
The arrests come after two previous encounters Chase Lackard had with law enforcement. Police say he was shot by officers in Soundview in November 2024 after allegedly pointing a gun at them. Authorities also say he was involved in a gang-related fight in January 2023 in which he was shot.
The City of Mount Vernon confirmed Jennifer Lackard's employment with the police department has been terminated.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the city wrote, "The allegations are unrelated to her duties with the Mount Vernon Police Department and do not stem from any conduct associated with the Department or the performance of her official responsibilities."
The city added that the department's Wellness Unit, which Jennifer Lackard led, will continue to operate normally. Officials declined to comment further, citing the active investigation with the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
