Students at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains are continuing a 12-year annual tradition of battling the region's food insecurity crisis.

The  monthlong campaign, known as the "Souper Bowl" food drive, began in early January with a goal of collecting 15,000 nonperishable items. The students surpassed that goal, bringing in more than 20,000 donations.

They formed a long assembly line this morning, passing along bags of food items to fill up a Feeding Westchester truck.

The high school's annual food drive aims to help the nonprofit in its mission to assist communities throughout Westchester in the fight against hunger, addressing low inventories at food pantries following the holiday season.

“Westchester just see those who are less fortunate than us, and just knowing that we’re able to have an impact on their lives by using what we can do to help them…it sort of lifts up your spirit,” said Jordan Prado, a senior at Archbishop Stepinac High School.

“It just brought a lot of people together and a lot of classes and schoolmates," said Jeb Cajamarca, another senior at Archbishop Stepinac High School. "Everyone had a fun time doing it”

In recognition of surpassing this year's goal, the students will be rewarded with a day off this Monday, the day after Super Bowl Sunday.
