Small towns and villages across the Hudson Valley are recovering from last week’s historic rainstorms that flooded communities.

News 12’s Jade Nash was in the Village of Highland Falls on Saturday and spoke with community-based organizations that are assisting in the recovery efforts.

The American Red Cross set up at Sacred Heart Church School to help with general aid.

"We are providing cots, shelter, food. We're distributing water and we're trying to get in supplies for cleaning,” said shelter manager Sue Roman.

Roman said the Red Cross has been assisting people at their shelter since the storms rolled through last Sunday and will be available to serve as long as needed.

Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse has also reached out to help Highland Falls homeowners.

"We have volunteers out who are helping take out wet belongings, wet carpeting, wet drywall from people's homes and cleaning up debris that's in the yards,” said regional program manager Shannon Daley.

On Saturday morning, volunteers from the group helped restore the damaged home of resident Brian Fredrickson.

"My back retaining wall is gone. The back walkway up to the foundation is gone. A lot of water damage. The pumps in the house failed, so the water just kept coming in,” he said.

Five Star Laundry was another company that provided services to those who need clean clothes. They offered free laundry services on Saturday to those impacted by the rain.

"I wanted to step in because I saw the suffering that was going on in the neighborhood and I’ve been here, I'm part of the community so this is a way for us to give back,” said co-owner Michael Addison.
