The Yonkers community gathered at Hall Friday where all the Hispanic flags were displayed to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Salvadorian flag was raised in honor of the growing Salvadoran population in Yonkers.
Armando Rivas has lived in Yonkers for 30 years. He said seeing the Salvadorian flag flying next to the American flag makes him feel proud. He encourages all to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
"I came here when I was 14. So I have my culture from El Salvador as well as an American, too. So I'm so proud to be an American and so proud to be a Salvadoran. I will give my life for both," he said.
After the flag raising, revelers dined on Salvadorian cuisine at a nearby church.
Hispanic Heritage Month runs through Oct. 15.
