A Sloatsburg couple is trying to stop construction on a neighboring house because they say it is ruining their own home.
When Susan Sia arrived home Thursday, she found cherished possessions and gifts smashed on the floor. She also says her house was shaking. She claims the vibration was coming from the construction of a more than $500,000-house being built next door.
Susan's husband Paul says the project has been a nightmare from the beginning. He says cracks are all along the window casings of his home from excavators.
Other neighbors say the building permits on the home have expired, some as much as a year and half ago. However, neighbors say they have been unable to get the construction stopped. Many say the size of the new home is too big for the lot and for the neighborhood.
The mayor of Sloatsburg says the excavator was working within the law, but because of the damage he issued a stop-work order. The mayor says the village engineer will review the situation and hopefully make an improvement. However, residents are hoping the stop-work order will become permanent.
