Just when it looked like COVID-19 was under control, several Hudson Valley counties are launching pop-up vaccination sites, including at the Westchester Community College Extension Center in Mount Vernon.

Yonkers, New Rochelle and Mount Vernon make up about 40% of Westchester's active COVID-19 cases, which overall are double what they were a month ago.

These pop-up sites come as vaccination rates nationwide stagger and cases climb because of the delta variant.

Local vaccine sites are coming this week to Mount Vernon, Ossining, Tuckahoe in Westchester County, and to Pomona in Rockland County.

The pressure is on now to get the most vulnerable - minority communities - access to the vaccine.

"That demand has diminished and therefore we changed our model. Now, we're coming to you, to your neighborhood where it's convenient," says Heriberto Contreras, of the Westchester Health Department. "We want to make sure that the vaccine is accessible to everyone, and all the communities have access to it within walking distance."

The local push comes as the state scales down four more mass vaccination sites, including the one at Orange Community College.
