Hudson Valley residents are expressing their desire to change the name of the former Tappan Zee Bridge, now known as the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, once again, due to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's ongoing allegations.
Following a move in 2017 by Andrew Cuomo, the Tappan Zee Bridge was renamed in honor of his father, New York's 52nd governor.
Many are hoping the bridge will get its own name back.
“There's an historic element to this name, Tappan Zee...The water, the sea and the Indians that were here before we decided it was ours,” Mount Kisco resident Bill Manning said.
They say the scandal has stained the Cuomo name - as well as the bridge.
Assemblymember Tom Abinanti is introducing legislation to rename it and the welcome center located at the Westchester landing of the bridge.
"The bridge is the foremost symbol of the area. Calling it the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo-Tappan Zee Bridge should satisfy everyone," he says.
While opinions on the name of the bridge may vary, many agree that it is time to stop "the war on words" over the bridge that some believe is a link between the past and present.
