School districts around the Hudson Valley are bracing for the impact of Gov. David Paterson's proposed budget cuts.
Paterson is proposing $700 million in cuts to state education aid as part of a plan to fill a historic multi-billion dollar budget deficit.
Rockland County would see a decrease of nearly $14 million for its school districts if the plan is approved, while Orange County districts would lose more than $29 million in state aid.
In Cornwall, the cuts could reach $2.1 million. Tim Rehm, superintendent of the Orange County district, says to trim that amount out of next year's $55 million budget he'll have to institute deep cuts, possibly to sports and arts programs. Staff layoffs will also be in the offing, Rehm says.
