Winners of the nation's most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors were announced Tuesday night - and one winner was from the Hudson Valley.
Four students from the Hudson Valley were in the running for the Regeneron Science Talent Search:
Ariella Blackman, from Harrison High School
Cindy DeDianous, from Scarsdale High School
Samantha Milewicz, from Byram Hills High School
Joseph Robertazzi, from Ossining High School
Samantha Milewicz, of Armonk, came in eighth place, and won $60,000.
According to the Society For Science, Milewicz examined the immune reaction to a traumatic brain injury and found that it can trigger the body to overproduce an enzyme that degrades the protein that holds the cells of the blood-brain barrier together, causing it to leak.
The group had spent the past week competing in Washington, D.C. at the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
Their projects earned them spots in the final 40 out of 2,000 applicants.
