Families, friends and supporters gathered at Rye Beach on Sunday for the inaugural Angel Walk.

The event honors 12-year-old Michael Maffei, a Rye Neck student who died of cancer last year. The event also raises money for families who are facing the challenges of pediatric cancer.

Michael's family says the walk was created not only to remember him, but to continue the spirit of generosity and support that surrounded them during his illness.

“He was the kind of kid who just lit up a room,” said Michael’s father, Michael Maffei. “Instead of dwelling on it, moping on it, let’s do something positive. In his honor, that’s the way he would have wanted it.”

Hundreds of participants gathered along the shoreline, walking in Michael’s memory while supporting children and families who are currently fighting cancer.

Organizers say funds raised through the Saint Michael’s Angels Children’s Foundation will help families cover costs often associated with treatment, including travel expenses, medical needs and, in some cases, funeral expenses.

“People did for us, so now we’re helping other people out,” Maffei said. “Anything I can do to comfort them and help them out.”

Supporters say the event was about more than raising money. It was also about building a community of compassion for families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.

“Sometimes, out of sadness, you find strength inside, and you want to make a difference,” said participant Nicole Gagnon.

Dana Gentile, of Mount Pleasant, said simple acts of kindness can make a lasting impact.

“How we treat each other matters...being there, that extra support and checking in on kids. It’s that extra hug in the hallway,” Gentile said.

For the Maffei family, the walk transformed grief into action, ensuring Michael’s legacy continues to help others.

Those interested in supporting the fight against pediatric cancer can learn more through the Saint Michael’s Angels Children’s Foundation website.
