Hundreds came with their hearts heavy and heads hung low Tuesday to say a final goodbye to a New City teen who died in a car accident.
Some mourners arrived an hour before the funeral at Temple Beth Sholom. Many said they were personally touched by 19-year-old Brandon Berman's infectious smile and good nature.
"It's a huge hole," said family friend Lisa Lisnak. "I feel so bad for the friends and family that were really close to him."
Berman and four friends were driving home in an SUV Saturday after a day at the Jersey Shore. They were celebrating his birthday. Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over. Berman was partially ejected and another vehicle was also hit in the accident.
As word spread about Berman's death, friends poured out their emotions on Facebook.
"He was just a sweetheart, all around gentleman," said Matt Rosenberg. "He went beyond the call of duty and was a great person."
Berman was laid to rest at New Hempstead's Brick Church Cemetery. He's survived by two older brothers and his parents.
