Well, today happens to be hunger Action Day, and every September there's a nationwide campaign to raise awareness against food insecurity. So News Twelve's Lisa Laraca is at Feeding Westchester in Elmsford this morning to talk about this important issue. Lisa. Yeah, you know, Lisa, and you may be surprised. A lot of people may be surprised, but here at Feeding Westchester they tell us 1 in 3 households in Westchester County are at risk for hunger. So that's why donations, volunteering so important. Let me introduce you to Elizabeth. Talk a little bit about that that you know how you depend so much on giving. Good morning, Lisa. Yes, absolutely, we're relying on our community now more than ever to help support feeding Westchester and nourish our neighbors here in Westchester. We have 175 partner agencies, shelters, food pantries that rely on us in order to fill their shelves. So we definitely urge the community to get involved. There are many ways, um, through donations that you mentioned and then also getting involved through volunteerism, donating food, um, we're right here in Elmsford and we encourage you. Stop by. Yeah, so I mean and that's what we were talking about before that you know somebody watching saying you know I'd love to help, but I don't have extra money to give but that's OK because there are other ways to get involved. Absolutely there are many ways to get involved volunteering here, donating through a food drive, and we have a wonderful program called Nourishing Neighbors and that's a program where you can give monthly or quarterly to help fight hunger here believe it or. Not just $15 every month. That's the cost of a single lunch can help feed one of our neighbors for an entire month. That's a big impact. That's a huge impact. And then I know you have to, you had to get creative because of federal cuts as well. Talk about how that has affected you. Absolutely federal cuts are very dramatic here at Feeding Westchester. We have an incredible group of volunteers and donors that have been supporting us. We have something really fantastic that's happening here in our new space as we're expanding. We have some naming opportunities as well, um, so we definitely encourage you if you're interested in leaving a legacy here at Feeding Westchester. Good morning to Eli. Good morning everybody. You know, one of the things that they do at Feeding Westchester is also education is a big part of teaching people how to eat healthy. So look at this amazing cool new cart that they have. Let me introduce you to Rebecca, and we have Melanie and we have Sophia and Monique here to talk about it so. Let's start with you, Rebecca. again, education's a big part of what you guys do here. That's right. Nutrition education is at the heart of what we do at Feeding Westchester. We teach healthy eating through workshops and cooking demonstrations all across Westchester County. And so now you have this amazing new cart that you can bring out with you with the mobile food pantry and Um, you know, Danone has partnered up, so I mean partnerships are so important as well. Yeah, so Danone's been a partner with Feeding Westchester for almost 20 years, and as a food company our mission is to bring healthy food to as many people as possible. We do that through yogurts and plant-based foods, and we're so excited about the cart now because it's bringing it to life and we're really teaching about nutritious eating and look at how amazing everything. So great. So you know you have the mobile food pantry and you roll this out so while you're helping folks get some extra things that they need, oh, and by the way, let's teach you how to eat healthy. So we have, and I gotta tell you it smells really good in here. So it's carrot, it's a spicy carrot and squash, right? Yes, yes, so it's a carrot squash and um spicy carrot squash sorry that has um. Vegetable broth, apple cider vinegar, oil, Dijon mustard, a little bit of brown sugar, salt and pepper, really good. I hope you like it. Let me just add the final touch if you don't mind. It smells good. Nicole, can you, can you see it? Can I lift it up a little bit there so you can see it? Look at that. That looks beautiful. So it's so you have to love being able to go out and, and teach people about cooking and all of that, yeah, absolutely, um, for us it, it just, uh, solidifies and extends the work that we're doing. It's amazing to not only nurse the com the community but also to offer some knowledge and skills that will empower them to lead a healthy lifestyle and also to maximize on the food that they're getting and even their budgets, you know, snap, uh, budget cuts and things like that. This is a vital time for our community members to understand what they can do with the funds that they have, and this is one way to do it, yeah, absolutely, and, and teaching people how to cook and how to eat healthy and happy and all that that's, you know, so there's so many. Things that you can get involved with with especially this month with Feeding Westchester. Yeah, our corporate partners are really stepping up and we're so excited about that for Hunger Action Month, and you can learn more about our corporate partnership opportunities at our website feeding Westchester.org. There's a lot of volunteer opportunities like you said, so lots of good I can't wait to to sample this stuff and, uh, to see this out in action, really good stuff. Talk about the statistic and it's always so surprising. 1 in 3 people in Westchester are at risk for, yeah, 1 in 3 people in Westchester County are at risk of hunger and as days like this, hunger action day we can shine a light on that need. Yeah, and so important to to let people know there's so many things that they can do to help, right? Absolutely, yeah, you can volunteer, you can donate and today is a great opportunity to donate because our great. donor Debbie Newman Bernstein has donated $50,000 and every single dollar you donate up to $50,000 today will be doubled. Wow, that's great, and that will, that could go a long way. So Bruce, I know and today you're, you're in orange, you're decked out, uh, for Hunger Action Day. The, the bridge is going to be lit up in orange tonight too, right? Yeah, we have so many activities and events for, uh, hunger Action Month, Lisa, uh, starting with the bridge, um, being lit up tonight in, uh, recognition of Hunger Action Day and again on Friday. Um, yesterday, County Executive, uh, Ken Jenkins and the county, uh, proclaimed, uh, hunker Action Month in Westchester County. And recognize Feeding Westchester. We have a nice proclamation here being held by, uh, my assistant crunch, uh, and we have events all through the month. And so you can find out about those events by going on the Feeding Westchester website. There's so many things you can do. You can get involved, really important stuff here. Our friend Brian with us, thanks so much for always being the first one to get up early with us. How you doing this morning? Great, always fun having you here to help us kick start the operation. Absolutely. So every time I come here and Ryan is in charge of the gigantic warehouse here, every time I come, you guys are doing more and more here. Yeah, it seems like we've been on. Construction for the past few years, but I'm excited to really, you know, get the space we need to do what we do. So Nicole, I'm going to let Nicole show the magic. Go ahead and watch how cool this is. Open sesame. There you go. So tell us about this. This is your new cooler. Yeah, we get an additional 2900 square feet, about 200 extra pallet positions, which is about 10 tractor trailer loads, more of fresh produce and dairy that we can now fit. Yeah, that's great. So we had a Fill these fill all of these shelves now, right? So let you know we've talked about how it's difficult with with cuts, how you guys are really having to try to get creative. Yeah. Yeah, so one of the things we do is we go out and rescue food. So last year over 5 million pounds of perfectly nutritious good food kept out of landfills and distributed to our neighbors in need. Yeah, that's amazing. So, OK, well we're going to be here all morning, but we wanted to quickly Say on your website you have a donor who is matching uh donations that are made today.
