Police are searching for the man who stabbed a livery cab driver Sunday night on the Cross Bronx Expressway.
According to police, the incident happened shortly before midnight when the 39-year-old driver picked up the suspect at 163rd Street and Southern Boulevard. The man asked to be dropped off at Westchester and Lawrence avenues, but when the cab stopped in front off 1850 Cross Bronx Expressway, the suspect took out a knife and stabbed the driver several times before taking off empty handed. The driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Investigators say the suspect is in his 30s or 40s. He was last seen wearing a Yankees skull cap and a tan overcoat. He may have tattoos across the knuckles and on top of his right hand.
A spokesperson for the State Federation of Taxi Drivers says the number of cab robberies has dropped recently, but there is a concern that the economic downturn will soon reverse this trend.
Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
