Narcan nasal spray, which can reverse opioid overdoses, will be sold nationwide over the counter at Walgreens on Thursday.
It's the latest pharmacy to make the lifesaving medication easily accessible to the public without a prescription.
September is National Recovery Awareness Month. For many, recovery will include relapses in their drug addiction. That is why doctors say making Narcan over the counter is vital.
"I think everyone should have it," said Dr. Eldene Towey, section chief of addiction psychiatry at WMCHealth's MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie. "Everyone should have one in their car, in their bag. I mean there is no downside to it."
Narcan will also now be sold at grocery stores, convenience stores and online.
