3 sirens fail in Indian Point test
Despite being closed, the Indian Point Power Plant in Buchanan had a siren test on Wednesday evening.
The sirens were expected to be heard for four minutes in parts of Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties.  One siren in Westchester, one in Rockland and one in Orange County failed the siren test. This means that less than 2% of the people who live in a 10-mile zone did not hear the test.
Representatives from Indian Point say they aim for 100% success and will get those three sirens fixed.
In an actual emergency, the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to a local radio or television station for important information and directions.
Indian Point Unit 3 was shut down on April 30, while Unit 2 was shut down in April 2020.
Holtec International is decommissioning the facility.
