An 18-year-old inmate at a juvenile detention center in Orange County is facing criminal charges after a violent incident at the facility last week, state police say.

Gregory Tompkins is accused of using a shank on the evening of Nov. 21 to threaten and physically steal keys from a Goshen Secure employee, who authorities say he then assaulted.

News 12 first reported on the violence at the detention center on Friday. It was originally described by several employees, who spoke to News 12 under the condition of anonymity, as a “takeover attempt.”

Police say Tompkins attacked a second employee, used the keys to get into another part of the secure detention center and attacked two residents.

Officials say several fights among other inmates broke out but that no one other than Tompkins was arrested.

Tompkins faces multiple charges including robbery and assault and is being held in Orange County Jail on $2,000 bail or $10,000 bond. State police say if Tompkins makes bail, he’ll be sent back to Goshen Secure. The facility is overseen by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. According to their website, it houses male juvenile offenders convicted of violent felony crimes until the age of 21, and male wards of the court who need secure placement until 18 years of age.

A representative for OCFS tells News 12, “OCFS’ top priority is the health, safety and well-being of all youth and staff in OCFS-operated facilities. Staff followed proper protocols and the incident in question was deescalated accordingly. No staff were hospitalized, and all staff have returned for their regularly scheduled shifts. We cannot comment further on active agency and law enforcement investigations.”
