The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a possible work from home scam.

The organization says the scammers claim to be based here in the tristate.

Here's some advice from the Federal Trade Commission on avoiding work from home scams:

  • Google the company name along with the word “scam” or “complaint”. A lack of complaints won’t prove a company is legit, but complaints can tip you off to a possible problem.

  • Never pay money to get a job -- that includes if a company sends you a check but asks you to return part of the money – the check will almost certainly bounce.

  • And avoid repackaging or reshipping jobs in general they’re usually not legit.
