The FDNY says a fire that started around 1:50 p.m. Friday damaged multiple buildings on Weirfield Street in Bushwick.

The fire was reported on the top floor of the building. About 192 EMS and firefighters responded.

Residents like Mia say there was a lot of smoke.

“It just kept smoking and smoking. I put the fan in my room and a gush of smoke comes under the wall and my room just completely filled," said Mia.

Fire officials say the buildings are attached and wood-frame, which caused the fire to spread quickly.

FDNY Assistant Deputy Assistant Chief Tim Keenan says the fire was put out before 3:30 p.m. and could have spread to the rest of the block if not for the quick work of the firefighters.

“When you have attached old wood frame buildings, any fire starts to spread very rapidly. And in a situation like this, when you have a cockloft that goes over all of them, once the fire gets in that cockloft, it's very difficult to stop it.”

The FDNY says nobody was injured. Residents like Abigail say she's coming to terms with the damage.

“I was raised here so all my memories, I’m getting flashbacks. I’ll be OK and I’m just glad that my family is OK," said Abigail.

The FDNY says the cause of the fire is under investigation.

News 12 reached out to the Red Cross to see how many families were impacted by the fire, but hasn't yet heard back.
