Using fake identification to buy cigarettes and alcohol in the Bronx and the city could become more difficult if a state senator has his way.
Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) is proposing a bill that requires bars and stores to use an electronic device to scans bar codes on the back of IDs. Currently, the practice is voluntary. The bar codes store information like a person?s physical description. The device is also able to detect fake cards.
The creator says the technology protects business owners from fines for providing alcohol and tobacco to minors.
