This year, we get an extra day! And to celebrate, some companies are offering customers deals and freebies. 

Ever wonder why we get that extra day every four years?

The Leap year exists, in large part, to keep the months in sync with annual events, including equinoxes and solstices, according to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. 

It’s a correction to counter the fact that Earth’s orbit isn’t precisely 365 days a year. The trip takes about six hours longer than that, NASA says.

Duck Donuts is offering customers a cinnamon sugar donut and hot coffee or cold brew combo for $2.29.

For Leap Day, Dunkin' members can make the extra calendar day count with a $2 medium cinnamon vanilla coffee when they order in the mobile app. Plus, members earn 4X points on all app orders on Feb. 29.

Krispy Kreme is offering customers a dozen original glazed doughnuts for $2.29 with the purchase of any regularly priced dozen.

Insomnia Cookies is offering a free six-pack of cookies to those with a birthday on Leap Day. Anyone else can receive a bonus cookie, for the bonus day, when purchasing 12 and six-pack cookies. 

Milk Bar is offering a free full-sized cake for those celebrating their birthday on Feb. 29 (excluding stores inside Nordstrom department stores.

Paradox at American Dream Mall is offering free admission for anyone with a Leap Day birthday on Feb. 29.

Staples is offering 29,000 of its easy rewards members free complimentary passport photos taken in-store on Feb. 29 through the Staples App. Those who spend $29 or more in store and at Staples.com, can receive 29x points.

Wendy’s is giving out free Cinnabon Pull-Aparts on Leap Day during breakfast hours. 

What are people born on leap day called? Those who are born on Feb. 29 are typically called "leaplings." According to Build-A-Bear, about 200,000 people in the U.S. have a birthday once every four years.
