A village of Monroe police lieutenant's son was hospitalized Tuesday after authorities say he blew through an intersection and sideswiped an SUV.
The accident happened where Stage Road and Orange Turnpike intersect Pine Tree Road. Officers realized the motorcyclist was Mark Melchiorre, the son of Lt. Alex Melchiorre, when they arrived at the scene."It's tough enough to roll up on an accident where people are injured," says Chief Dominic Guidice. "When it's one of your own, it's very tough."
Melchiorre, 22, was traveling along Stage Road when he blew through the intersection, according to Guidice. Melchiorre sideswiped the SUV, which was coming from the opposite direction. The woman and her two children in that vehicle are OK.
Melchiorre suffered head and shoulder injuries. No charges have been filed and police continue to investigate. Guidice says Melchiorre is lucky to be alive.
"When you're on a motorcycle, you don't get ? many second chances. And definitely if you're an operator of the motorcycle you should be very careful," he says.
