Local animal shelters see spike in pet drop-offs
Animals shelters around the Hudson Valley are reporting growing numbers of pets being turned over because their owners can no longer afford to support them.
Kenneth Ey, executive director of Hi-Tor Animal Shelter in Pomona, says recently a dog had been dropped off by his owner because of the economy.
?He just couldn't keep the dog anymore,? Ey says. ?He had to move out of his house.?
Ey says although there has been an increase in adoptions at his shelter recently, this trend could soon reverse. The most immediate concern for the Pomona pet shelter is how the economic crisis may affect donations.
?We can always use canned dog or cat food,? Ey says. ?Some people have been very generous in bringing us bedding.?
