Churches across Long Island were packed this Easter Sunday, as families and parishioners gathered to celebrate one of the holiest days in Christianity.

At Saint Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, it was standing room only. Church leaders say the turnout is a powerful sign of renewed faith and community.

“As a police officer said to me this morning, ‘We are back,’” said Father Michael Duffy. “It is so cool and so much fun to have so many people here celebrating the most important day of the year as Christians.”

The spirit of the holiday extended beyond the local community. In his Easter address, Pope Leo XIV called for peace and unity in regions facing conflict, including the Middle East and Ukraine, urging compassion during difficult times.

That message resonated with many in attendance.

“It would be wonderful to have peace around the world and for love to be everywhere,” said Patricia Dean.

For others, Easter serves as a time for personal reflection and renewal.

“It’s a great time for people to think about having a fresh start, coming back to church, or doing whatever they need to do in their lives,” said Greg Pandolfo.

While faith remains at the center of the holiday, families also embraced long-standing traditions, spending time together and creating lasting memories. For younger attendees, the joy of Easter was simple.

“The thing I like about Easter is spending time with my family and friends, and also finding the eggs!” one child said.

From packed churches to family celebrations, the day served as a reminder of faith, hope, and new beginnings for communities across Long Island.
