Loved ones gathered at the Community Baptist Church to say their final goodbyes to a 19-year-old who was fatally shot in what police describe as a “targeted assassination."

Police say Daquon Powell was shot six times through a car window on Morris Street on May 31.

On Monday, police announced three arrests connected to the crime. This included 20-year-old Matthew Quinones, the alleged gunman, along with two teenage accomplices police say are also linked to other recent gang shootings.

There was heavy police presence at Powell’s wake due to concerns that the killing will prompt retaliation and more deaths.

Powell is remembered by family and friends as a kindhearted individual. His cousin, Joshua Margolla, says Powell was the oldest of six children, graduated from Riverside High School in 2022 and had a fulltime job before his death.

“His life was taken, and he was a good person,” said Margolla. “It's gruesome. It's horrific."

“I am concerned with the rising gang violence because it is picking up more and more. We're only fighting each other when we should be fighting the people trying to keep us down,” he said.

Quinones is currently at the Westchester County jail and is due back in court on June 23.

Powell’s family says all they want is justice for his tragic death.

“I just hope he gets the right sentence I hope he doesn't get a slap on the wrist,” said Margolla.
