A major fire at a commercial property in the Circleville area of Wallkill was brought under control Tuesday, allowing Route 17 to reopen after significant traffic disruptions near Exit 118 at Fair Oaks.
The fire was reported near 307 Bloomingburg Road, a property associated with New York Bus Sales and Blue Flame Propane.
Orange County Emergency Management had earlier expressed concern because propane was located near the fire, prompting a large emergency response and roadway closures as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Officials said the fire is now under control. Route 17 has reopened to traffic, and emergency officials expect Route 17M to reopen shortly as firefighters and other responders begin packing up equipment and clearing the scene.
A large mutual-aid response brought numerous volunteer fire departments to the area. Heavy smoke from the fire was visible from Route 17 and could be seen for miles as crews battled the blaze.
It remains unclear exactly which building was damaged, whether any propane tanks were directly involved in the fire or whether anyone was injured.
This is a developing story.
