The challenge from Metallica to marching bands across the country was this: Incorporate Metallica music into a marching band performance.
“The Pride of Malverne Marching Band” won in the category for medium high school, tying with a Texas school.
The competition was fierce and the Malverne performers, along with their director, Glen Johnson, were elated when they found out they’d won.
Johnson said the 120 marching band performers had 250 hours of practice under their belts. Student Michael Lawless said everyone was “on edge” waiting to find out who’d won on Sunday night. When Johnson found out they’d won, he said his “heart was racing.” Student Uche Alozie said Monday she was “still in shock.”
Johnson said the marching band will receive $15,000 for equipment and instruments. He told students how the tie came to be: Two members of Metallica voted for Malverne and the other two voted for the Texas school.
