A 34-year-old man accused of stabbing a Mount Vernon Department of Public Works employee multiple times appeared before a judge Wednesday.

Police say Shakiem Stanley is charged with first-degree assault in connection with the stabbing, which investigators say happened shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday on North Seventh Avenue.

According to a criminal complaint, police say the incident began after Stanley got into an argument with the worker over the volume of a sanitation truck, which Stanley claimed woke him up.

Video captured part of the confrontation and shows a man armed with knives confronting two DPW employees, who were holding bats. Police say the workers grabbed the bats in self-defense.

Investigators say Stanley then stabbed one of the workers multiple times, including in the arm and stomach. The victim was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be OK.

During Stanley's arraignment Wednesday, prosecutors asked that he be remanded, citing two prior felony convictions. The judge also issued a temporary order of protection.

The defense requested medical and psychiatric evaluations. Stanley was remanded and is due back in court next week.
