A Middletown man is sharing his painful story of homelessness in hopes of finding work and a place to live.

Lee, who is transitioning and identifies as a man, is 38 years old and has little more than the food on the front seat of his truck and the clothes on his back.

He has been living in his car for the past two months after losing both his job and Middletown apartment during the pandemic.

So far, he's been unable to find work or a place to live.

"I give them my license and it says Lisa, and they say, 'No you're not' -- and I say, 'Yes, I am,'" Lee said.

Lee says each member of his family – including his mom -- passed away within the last two decades. He's living on donations from strangers for gas and food.

"This is something I've not experienced," he said.

According to a 2020 report by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, transgender people are among the most likely to face housing, health and safety challenges.

Lee says he's tried to get help for housing and work through social services and nonprofit groups, but has been unable to make any progress.

Despite his struggles, he's keeping his head up.

"I like to stay positive," he said.
